Port of San Diego to Begin Repaving Project on Shelter Island Drive

As part of its major maintenance program to repair streets and parking lot pavement areas, the Port of San Diego will be repaving a portion of Shelter Island Drive beginning on Jan. 14, 2008.

The project will be conducted in phases to minimize impact on traffic. The final phase is anticipated to be completed by April 10, 2008. The project consists of repaving and resurfacing the street beginning southwest of the traffic roundabout near the Silver Gate Yacht Club. Work will proceed towards the Yokohama Friendship Bell, near the island’s southern tip.

During the repaving, one lane of Shelter Island Drive will remain open to traffic in both directions. Traffic control will be onsite throughout the project’s duration and access to businesses will not be impeded. The public fishing pier and boat launch ramp will remain accessible. Work will occur Monday through Friday, however, there is a possibility that some weekend work may take place, depending upon the weather and/or the construction schedule.

A public parking lot across from the Silver Gate Yacht Club will be closed to the public to allow staging for construction vehicles and materials. In addition, there will be no street parking on the portions of Shelter Island Drive that are being repaved. Temporary “no parking” signs will be placed 72 hours in advance to indicate the specific days, dates and times of closures. Another public lot, adjacent to the Koehler Kraft Co. boat yard at 2302 Shelter Island Drive will be closed from Jan. 14 through March 11 for repaving.

There are several public parking lots that will not be affected by the project. Those include a lot by the Pacific Portal gazebo, the lot by the launch ramp and fishing pier, and the lot next to the Harbor Police station.

Hazard Construction was selected as the contractor and the total contract amount for the project is $886,250.00.
