Broken Sewer Line on Imperial Beach Pier Causes Temporary Water Shut-off

Heavy surf caused pipe to break underneath pier

Heavy surf resulting from recent storms has severed a portion of the sewer line beneath the Imperial Beach Pier. Approximately 150 feet of the sewer line is damaged.

The Port of San Diego took immediate action and shut off water to the pier to prevent sewage from public restrooms on the pier, the Tin Fish Restaurant and the Lifeguard Tower from entering the ocean water. These facilities will remain closed until the repairs have been completed and water service has been returned. At this time, only water for fire service to the pier has been restored.

Port of San Diego General Services staff is evaluating the damage and will hire a contractor to conduct emergency repairs.

The Port of San Diego has notified the Department of Environmental Health and the Regional Water Quality Control Board. The Department of Environmental Health will collect water samples for bacteria levels from the Imperial Beach pier area on either January 10 or January 11, 2008.
