Port of San Diego and Port of Ensenada Celebrate 20-Year Anniversary as Sister Ports

On September 25, 2024, the Ports of San Diego and Ensenada, along with dignitaries from each region, partners, and stakeholders hosted a ceremony and reception to celebrate 20 years of a sister port relationship and collaboration in regional economic development. The event took place at the Port Pavilion on Broadway Pier and was attended by leadership teams and key staff from both ports, representatives from the offices of San Diego Councilwoman Vivian Moreno and Consul General Alicia Palma, and dignitaries from the state of Baja California.

“A strong binational relationship with our neighbors in Baja California provides a mutually beneficial relationship that trickles down to each region’s local economies,” said Chairman Frank Urtasun, Port of San Diego Board of Port Commissioners. “After 20 years of a successful sister port relationship, I look forward to what we can achieve in the next 20 years to help deliver on our promise.”

"The National Port System Administration (ASIPONA) Ensenada aims to strengthen our ties and promote sustainable development in the port sector while fostering economic growth in the region," said Vice Admiral Joel Sandoval Gomez, Director of the Port of Ensenada. "This memorandum of understanding shows how a good working relationship is beneficial to both regions."

During the celebration, the two ports signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), marking a significant milestone in their ongoing partnership. This agreement showcases the commitment of both ports to further strengthen their collaboration and encourage mutual growth. The signing of the MOU symbolizes the extension of the two ports’ cooperative relationship and outlines the following key initiatives:

  • Expanding Cruise Business Opportunities: Both ports aim to increase the amount of cruise ships docking at their facilities, capitalizing the growing demand for cruise tourism in the region. The relationship between Ensenada and San Diego is essential for the cruise industry, particularly for short trips to Baja California, other California ports, and Hawaii. Cruises departing from United States cities like San Diego are legally required to stop at a foreign port, and Ensenada fulfills this requirement. This partnership improves tourism by providing a wider range of destinations and experiences for passengers, making many popular cruises possible only with Ensenada.

  • Aquaculture: This collaboration focuses on advancing sustainable aquaculture practices to support the regional economy and promote environmental stewardship.

  • Ferry Service Between Ensenada and San Diego: A proposed ferry service aimed to connect the two ports, improving travel and commerce between the U.S. and Mexico. While the ferry is still under development, its potential success could significantly improve connectivity between the port cities and enhance tourism.
