The National City-based nonprofit Olivewood Gardens and Learning Center is the Port of San Diego’s Anchors of Excellence awardee for April. Olivewood Gardens is honored for its continued service to the public in the areas of community health and well-being. Port Chair Danielle Moore presented the award at the April 15 Board of Port Commissioners meeting.

“The Port of San Diego is proud to continue honoring some of the outstanding community members, businesses, and nonprofit organizations, like Olivewood Gardens and Learning Center, that are making a lasting impact on the community," said Chair Danielle Moore, Port of San Diego Board of Port Commissioners. "Through hands-on educational opportunities focused on organic gardening, environmental conservation, and nutrition education, Olivewood Gardens provides community members with the skills and self-esteem needed to carry out healthier lives."

Olivewood Garden and Learning Center champions health equity & food justice for all through education, access, and advocacy programs. Located on an eight-acre garden in National City, Olivewood Gardens encourages visitors to explore the interrelationships between a quality diet, sustainable agriculture, and healthy living. Each month, Olivewood Gardens and Learning Center offers dozens of classes for those living in South County and beyond. Their events include gardening seminars, healthy meal preparation classes, and community gatherings, to get people excited about nutrition and leading healthier lifestyles.

“Olivewood Gardens and Learning is proud to accept this award. For over 15 years we've worked with our community to cultivate a deep connection to the environment through garden-based nutrition and sustainable agriculture practices and programs,” said Jen Nation, Executive Director of Olivewood Gardens and Learning Center. “We've deepened our connection through healthy food access, education and advocacy and are grateful to see this work recognized.”
