The Port of San Diego is proud to announce its very own Renée Yarmy, program director for Maritime Sustainable Development, has received a prestigious Women in Smart Energy (WISE) Award. The Smart Energy Decisions WISE awards program celebrates the significant contributions women are making in the transition to smart energy, recognizing leaders across the following categories: Innovation, Project/Initiative, Leadership, Mentorship, Rising Star, and Industry Veteran. Yarmy accepted the award for Innovation at the Net Zero Forum on February 28 in The Woodlands, Texas.
Yarmy was recognized for her work on clean energy and sustainability projects at the Port, including the Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal Microgrid, a renewable, solar-powered microgrid which provides backup power to Port-operated facilities, including security infrastructure, lights, and the existing jet fuel storage system. Yarmy is also integral to the Port’s other electrification efforts, including the ongoing transition to shore power at all marine terminals, the first all-electric cranes in North America, the first all-electric tugboat in the United States, as well as the Port’s transition to all-electric trucks and cargo handling equipment.
“Renée Yarmy is a force to be reckoned with at the Port of San Diego,” said Maritime Director Joel Valenzuela, Port of San Diego. “Renée has a hand in nearly all our electrification efforts across our entire supply chain, from shore power at our marine terminals for ocean-going vessels, to the microgrid at the Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal. While this has been a team effort, Renée’s leadership has been vital to these projects.”
Yarmy has worked on energy projects with the Port of San Diego since June 2015. Before 2015, she worked as a consultant for other ports in the state of California, including the Port of Long Beach, where she was instrumental in developing sustainable design and construction guidelines for the Engineering Bureau.
Smart Energy Decisions is the first web-based information resource dedicated to addressing the information needs of large power customers from commercial, industrial, institutional, and government organizations. The WISE Awards are given to eligible women who work in these sectors.
